Lisbon's climate is its greatest structural advantage as an event destination. Over 2,800 hours of sunshine annually, mild winters, warm summers, and the soft extraordinary light that characterises Atlantic-facing southern European cities — all of these make the city usable for events across a much longer season than northern European alternatives.
But not all months are equal, and the differences matter significantly for event planning. Here is an honest season-by-season assessment.
Spring: March to May
Our most consistently recommended season for private events in Lisbon. Temperatures range from 16°C to 23°C, the light is extraordinary — clear and golden without summer's heat haze — and the city's gardens and parks are at their peak. Venue availability is good across all categories. The city's hospitality industry is fully staffed and operating at high quality. Rain is possible, particularly in March, which requires outdoor event contingency planning, but rarely disrupts well-planned programmes.
April is particularly good for event quality, combining reliable sunshine with the full flowering of the city's jacaranda trees — a visual element that requires no effort to incorporate and consistently delights guests.
Summer: June to August
High season brings certain challenges alongside its obvious advantages. Temperatures can reach 38°C in July and August, making afternoon outdoor activities impractical. Evening events, however, are magnificent — warm, dry, with the extraordinary quality of summer light that makes Lisbon's rooftops and gardens genuinely unrepeatable. The key planning adjustment for summer is shifting the programme: late arrivals, afternoon recovery, evening programmes that run from sunset onwards.
June is particularly recommended for the Festas de Lisboa — the city's traditional saints' festivals — which create an atmosphere of spontaneous street celebration that adds enormous energy to evening programmes designed around them.
Autumn: September to November
September and October provide what many experienced event professionals consider Lisbon's finest season — the light, now lower and more golden, is arguably more beautiful than at any other time of year. Temperatures remain warm (20°C to 26°C in September) but the intensity of summer has passed. Venue availability improves as summer bookings clear. The harvest season brings the city's food and wine culture to a particular peak.
Winter: December to February
Lisbon's winters are mild by northern European standards (10°C to 15°C) but too variable for outdoor event programming without robust contingency plans. The compensation is significant: venues that are fully booked from April to October become available at short notice and often at reduced rates. The city feels genuinely local — unhurried, unfashionable in the best sense, full of the residents rather than the visitors. For intimate groups who value authenticity over perfect weather, winter Lisbon is exceptional.
